Reading the map

Each circle is one bomb or shell impact, coloured by weapon type and sized by the number of casualties. A gold ring marks impacts that have a photograph. With the long-range-gun layer active, a red axis shows the direction the shells came from; the timeline names the active firing position (the guns moved three times over 1918, ~90–113 km NE), and “View firing area” zooms out to show all three. Click any impact for its date, casualties, the original report, photos and sources — and use the timeline (press ▶) to replay the bombardment from 1914.

Where the data comes from

Each impact is taken from the recapitulative table in the French Wikipedia article, which compiles three layers of primary documentation:

Contemporary press (per-event)

Most events are sourced to newspapers that reported each raid the next day, digitised by the Bibliothèque nationale de France on Gallica — chiefly L'Excelsior and Le Petit Parisien. Where a specific article exists, it is linked in that impact's popup.

Bombardements de Paris et de sa banlieue durant la Première Guerre mondiale (French Wikipedia) — the source table.

Coordinates: each address is geocoded within its commune (matched by INSEE code) or arrondissement. 678 of 820 events resolve to an exact street address; the remaining 142 — renamed or demolished streets, intersections and landmarks — are placed at the area centre and flagged ⚠ in their popup. Casualty figures (285 killed, 755 wounded) are parsed from the free-text French notes.
